Short-term Housing for Wounded Warriors: Operation Homefront Village
Wounded warriors are a specific concern for Operation Homefront. According to recent statistics, more than 30,000 service members have been wounded in action. Service members disabled from injuries return home, are discharged from the service and have 30 days to vacate base housing. Then they have to wait, some as long as 18 months, for their VA compensation to begin while they continue recuperating at major medical facilities (and pay the mortgage back home).  That is why Operation Homefront is establishing Operation Homefront Villages near Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC.

Operation Homefront Villages are rent-free and fully-furnished 2- and 3-bedroom apartment units. They also feature extensive community centers, space for children to play, computers with specialized software to accommodate disabilities, and counselors to assist with filing benefit claims, educational assistance including scholarships and college enrollment, and help train for and find good-paying jobs.
Priority placement for housing will be defined as followed:

  • Wounded service members who will be receiving a medical discharge or retirement within six months and up to two years after military discharge or retirement.
  • Wounded service members receiving treatment at local military hospitals
  • Service Members/Veterans who are within six months of discharge and up to two years after discharge and are pursuing higher education and are unable to afford housing on their own.
  • Service Members/Veterans who are within six months of discharge or up to two years after discharge and are unable to afford housing.

Foreclosure Prevention
The housing crisis presents major financial challenges to many military families, and Operation Homefront has seen a significant increase in foreclosures. Operation Homefront can provide emergency financial assistance with mortgage and rent payments for families of deployed and families of wounded warriors. More important, in some cases, we can help modify and renegotiate mortgage loans to create a reasonable mortgage payment and ensure families can continue to live in their homes.

For more information on the housing programs, please speak with your local Operation Homefront chapter or if there is not a chapter in your state, please contact our Military Family Support department.

Operation Homefront provides emergency assistance and morale to our troops, to the
families they leave behind, and to wounded warriors when they return home.
